“The eyes of my eyes are opened” - E.E. Cummings
This line from the E.E. Cummings poem “I thank you God for most this amazing” has travelled with me since childhood. I always seem to be seeking a little slice of mother nature wherever I am. I cannot live without some form of a garden, trees, grass, open spaces, sand between my toes and so, she threads her way into my work.
Each piece is an expression of nature's beauty; microcosms of wearable and sculptural objects incorporating aspects such as recurrence, pattern and symbiosis. History, poetry and the visual arts also influence my creative process.
For some time now, I have been using my craft practice to reflect on ideas of resilience and symbiosis. I have been developing one of a kind objects, small porcelain vessels that house a piece of jewellery on top. These objects evolve from my wanderings, visiting various natural ecologies, taking macro photographs and dissecting my findings to create the work. I am interested in developing this work to incorporate vessels that possess a jewel-like quality when viewed closely.
Over the last 20 years I have enjoyed experimenting and playing with various materials and techniques while continually learning new skills. This passion for learning has always been with me and to pass on this knowledge to others is essential in my practice.
