Sylvia Nevistic’s sovereign objects made of porcelain, gold, silver and other precious metals exhibit characteristics of poetry and the natural world such as rhythm, movement, pattern, texture and repetition. She has an interest in historical decorative arts, particularly ceramics from China and England which also informs her work.

Growing up in country NSW started her love affair with nature. In 1994 Sylvia completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Social Ecology with the University of Western Sydney prior to embarking on her craft career.

She moved to Melbourne to study an Associate Diploma of Jewellery at Northern Melbourne Institute of Tafe 1997 to 1998 and was awarded Best Overall Student, shortly after, she began her studio practice.

Living in Melbourne and then country Victoria for close to 20 years, Sylvia made the move to Adelaide in 2014 to undertake the Associate Program at the JamFactory Centre for Contemporary Craft where she currently is a studio tenant. This move gave her the opportunity to concentrate on her practice full time alongside teaching adult education classes and recently she has become a sessional lecturer at the University of South Australia.

“When I visit an art gallery, the first place I go to is the decorative arts section. I am drawn to handmade objects, both functional and for show. I can stand in front of a historical piece for some time, studying it in great depth; form, texture, technique or even shadows the displayed piece casts. These observations as well as my many wanderings in nature provide the framework for the pieces I create...the eyes of my eyes are open...”
